The former Queen of the Netherlands, Princess Beatrix, fell and broke her cheekbone which required surgery. She had surgery on the morning of September 22, 2013 and remained in the hospital a few days to recover. She then returned home to the Huis ten Bosch Palace in the Hague to recuperate further. The 75-year-old Royal Dutchwoman has had her fair share of tribulation as of late, as she tragically lost her son Prince Johan Friso in August. Prince Johan was injured in a severe snow-skiing accident in February of 2012. Following the accident, he slipped into a coma and remained in a state of minimal consciousness for a year and a half until his death. Prince Johan left behind two daughters, Zaria and Luana, as well as his wife, Princess Mabel. During his coma he was being taken care of at the Huis ten Bosch Palace. Princess Beatrix abdicated from the throne in April of 2013 in favour of her eldest son, King Willem-Alexander, reverting back to her original status of Princess after having ruled as the head of the House of Orange for thirty-three years. Nevertheless, Princess Beatrix continues to perform public duties and is scheduled for her next appearance on October 1st, 2013.
